SAMOA TSUNAMI Rebuild Manono Island Appeal. This Appeal would not have been possible without Escea.

This is a genuine appeal where a container of building materials and household goods were sent to Manono Island, situated about four kilometres of the coast of Upolu between Upolu and Savaii in Samoa. This island is home to a few hundred people spread over four small villages.
Prior to this appeal, this island had been referred to in some cases by the media as the “forgotten island” as aid had been sparse for the people of Manono.
Click here for a TV3 news item detailing some of the issues facing Manono.
While the NZ Navy and Air force restored fresh water and power to the island every building on the island needs to be rebuilt along with the islands main wharf. Given that the islands highest point is only around 100 metres the amount of damage done was substantial and by organising and insuring the container contents got delivered to Manono we hope that the help that Henry provided and the residents hard work get a long way towards rebuilding not only ther shattered homes, but their lives as well. While only one life from the island was lost there were many others lost who were associated with the island.
Who was behind this appeal? The instigators are two guys whose friendship stretches some 25 years, they are Henry Leiataua (born and raised on Manono Island) and Eion Wilson. Henry and Eion were being supported by Eseca Limited (Eion’s employer) and Escea’s CEO Nigel Bamford.
Escea held an auction and donated a fire for this event. Escea also made space available at the factory for the collection of goods and loading the container.

Eion and Henry (instigators)
While this is not associated with any of the usual relief agencies, it is genuine and all donations went directly to the appeal and those involved did not receiving any payment or funds for administration. The hope was that all the goods in the container would be donated and that money raised would help offset the cost of shipping the container a cost which at this point is being met by the two instigators. This hope was achieved and this would not have been possible without the help of everyone that was involved.
What has happened so far...
The container departed New Zeland on the 22nd of January 2010 and was due to arrive on Manono Island on the 4th of February. Unfortunately, the ship was delayed in Fiji and did not arrive until the 10th of February. Henry arrived on Manono Island on the 2nd of February and stayed for three weeks distributing the contents of the containing and helping build and repair the damages. The rebuilding of the island is still continuing but would not have progressed as much as it has without the following people and others that would like to remain anonymous.
